When can I exercise after YAG laser capsulotomy?

Short answer

Usually right away. The AAO says there are typically no activity restrictions after a posterior capsulotomy, but it asks you to confirm with your surgeon.

This is one of the biggest differences between a YAG capsulotomy and the cataract surgery that preceded it. After cataract surgery the AAO describes real limits: avoid lifting weights or heavy objects, avoid putting your head below your waist, and be cautious with anything that spikes your heart rate, because those can raise eye pressure while an incision is healing. After a posterior capsulotomy the AAO states that typically there are no activity restrictions, but asks you to check with your surgeon to be safe.

The reason is mechanical. Cataract surgery leaves a small incision that needs time to seal. A YAG capsulotomy makes an opening inside the eye with light and creates no external wound at all, so there is nothing on the surface that pressure or sweat can disturb. That is also why the AAO describes the recovery as returning to all your normal daily activities once your vision is clear.

The sensible limit on day 0 is vision, not exertion. Your pupil is dilated and your vision is blurry for hours, which makes anything requiring depth perception or fast reactions a bad idea. Once that clears, most people go back to their usual routine. If you have glaucoma, ask your ophthalmologist specifically, since eye pressure gets watched more closely in that group after this laser.

Sudden flashing lights, which some people describe as like seeing stars after being hit in the eye
A shower of many new floaters appearing at once, looking like specks, lines, or cobwebs
A shadow appearing in your peripheral (side) vision
A gray or dark curtain moving across part of your field of vision
Sudden decrease or loss of vision, or vision that improved and then got worse
Deep eye ache or brow pain with a hard, pressured feeling, halos, or nausea, which can mean an eye pressure spike
Increasing eye pain that is not settling, or pain with marked redness
Any new vision change that worries you, since a detached retina must be examined right away to protect vision

These warning signs after YAG laser capsulotomy can point to problems that need same-day care. Do not wait for your next scheduled visit. If you cannot reach your surgeon's office, use their on-call line, or go to an emergency room.
