When can I bend over and lift after trabeculectomy?

Short answer
Not until your surgeon clears you. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says avoid lifting, bending, or straining after trabeculectomy until cleared.
This is the restriction glaucoma surgeons care most about. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says you should not bend over, strain, lift heavy objects, or rub your eyes as you recover from trabeculectomy, and that your eye doctor will give you specific instructions and tell you when you can do these things again.
In its exercise guidance the American Academy of Ophthalmology repeats it for trabeculectomy and tube implants specifically, saying to avoid any lifting, bending, or straining until cleared by your doctor. The Glaucoma Research Foundation adds that heavy lifting and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least one week after glaucoma surgery, and lists bending and heavy lifting among things to avoid while recovering.
The reason is mechanical. Bending below the waist and straining push blood and pressure toward the head and can stress a freshly made drainage flap that is being held closed by adjustable sutures. Straining on the toilet counts, so ask your surgeon about a stool softener if constipation is likely with your pain medicine. Practical version, keep everything above waist height and light for at least the first week, then follow the number your surgeon gives you.
| When | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| First week | Nothing heavy. GRF says avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for at least one week. |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | AAO says avoid lifting, bending, or straining until your doctor clears you. |
| After clearance | Ramp up gradually rather than returning to your heaviest lift on day one. |
