When can I exercise after trabeculectomy?

General information about typical recovery, not medical advice. Every eye and every surgery is different, and your surgeon's instructions override anything on this page. Read our full disclaimer.

Short answer

Light walking is often allowed early, but strenuous exercise waits for surgeon clearance. Sources give no fixed date for trabeculectomy.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology guidance for trabeculectomy and tube implants is that light exercise such as walking or a treadmill may be permitted, while lifting, bending, and straining are avoided until your doctor clears you. Confirm even walking with your own surgeon first.

The Glaucoma Research Foundation says heavy lifting and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least one week after glaucoma surgery, and lists strenuous exercise among the things to take a break from during recovery.

Two extra things to raise with your surgeon. First, activities that invert your head, including certain yoga poses, raise eye pressure and are usually held longer. Second, contact sports and anything that could take a blow to the eye deserve a long term conversation, because the bleb is a thin walled structure that stays for life. Protective eyewear may be recommended permanently.
